Drink
Grapefruit-Rosemary Spritz
Potion of Clarity
A pitcher that works for everyone: bitter, bright and zero-proof, with an optional splash of an Italian bitter for anyone who wants it. Serve in lidded cups near the game.
At the table: Add soda only when you serve so it stays fizzy.

Why nowA bitter, grown-up drink that works with or without the aperitif, for a January when many people are drinking less.

Ingredients
As written: 8 drinks.
Rosemary syrup
Pitcher
Low-proof option, per glass
Method
Simmer the sugar and water until the sugar dissolves. Off the heat, add the rosemary and steep 20 minutes. Strain and cool.
In a pitcher, combine the grapefruit juice, lime juice, ⅓ cup of the syrup and the aperitif, if using. Taste and add more syrup if you like. Chill.
To serve, add the soda water and ice to the pitcher. Pour over ice with a grapefruit slice and a rosemary sprig.
Make ahead
The syrup keeps 2 weeks. The pitcher base (no soda) keeps 2 days in the fridge.
Holding
Add soda only when you serve so it stays fizzy.
Allergens
None of the major allergens as written. Always check labels on packaged ingredients.
Notes
For guests avoiding alcohol entirely (pregnancy, recovery), check the aperitif label, since many non-alcoholic aperitifs contain up to 0.5%, or leave it out.
Grapefruit interacts with a number of common medications, including some statins and blood-pressure drugs. Anyone unsure can take the salted-lemon soda instead.
Tavern Night
This dish's twist table (d6)
| 1–2 | The classic stands. No twist. Cook it as written. |
|---|---|
| 3 | Herb swap. Swap rosemary for thyme or sage |
| 4 | Acid strike. Swap grapefruit for blood orange |
| 5 | Plating challenge. Serve as a punch bowl with a ladle |
| 6 | Host's boon. The Host picks any twist above, or the table invents one. The safety rule still applies. |
Roll before you start cooking. No twist ever changes a time, a temperature or how done something must be.
