Brown Butter Crispy Treats
Goblin Gold Bars
Browning the butter first turns a childhood bake-sale square into something adults go back for. Extra marshmallows folded in at the end keep them soft and gooey.

Why nowA no-oven sweet the kids can help make and the whole table will finish.

Ingredients
One batch: 24 squares.
Kosher salt means Diamond Crystal. With Morton kosher salt, use about half.
Method
Butter a 9×13-inch pan.
Melt the butter in a large pot over medium heat, swirling, 5 to 7 minutes.
Look forBrown flecks on the bottom and a nutty smell. Pull it a few seconds early; it keeps cooking.
Lower the heat, add the 10 ounces of marshmallows, and stir until just melted.
Off the heat, stir in the salt and vanilla, then the cereal and the extra marshmallows.
Press gently into the pan with a buttered spatula. Do not pack it down.
Cool 1 hour, then cut into 24 squares.
Make ahead
Keep airtight up to 2 days.
Holding
All session.
Allergens
Contains milk. Always check labels on packaged ingredients.
Notes
Not vegetarian: most marshmallows contain gelatin. Vegetarian marshmallows work the same way.
Not tagged card-safe until tested; a square wrapped in wax paper keeps fingers clean.
Tavern Night
This dish's twist table (d6)
| 1–2 | The classic stands. No twist. Cook it as written. |
|---|---|
| 3 | Herb swap. Fold in ½ cup toasted coconut |
| 4 | Acid strike. Add 1 teaspoon orange zest with the vanilla |
| 5 | Plating challenge. Cut with a cookie cutter into coins and stack them as a hoard |
| 6 | Host's boon. The Host picks any twist above, or the table invents one. The safety rule still applies. |
Roll before you start cooking. No twist ever changes a time, a temperature or how done something must be.
